More PVP Questions

I know, I know, I should probably go look these questions up but you guys are so much more knowledgable and more help.

1) I grinded about 11k honor Sat in AV. Almost all of the people in the raid group had names after their character name except me. What's up with that? They were the same. Kinda like Moonpie-Burning Legion. What does Burning Legion mean?

2) I was thinking about the Gladiator set for pvp but I noticed that there is also a Vindicator set. Also, the set I'm looking at is pretty plain names like Gladiator Chain Gauntlets, Gladiator Chain Helm etc. My guildmate had something named Brutal Gladiator Chain Gauntlets. Is that same gear just an old season?

3) I've gained about 17k honor so far in AV but still don't understand what I'm doing except following the mob of people. I get the concept to kill Drek. I see in BG chat people saying defend the towers etc. Here is my guess but please tell me if this is how it works. I also understand there is more than 1 way to win AV. Twice yesterday we won by killing them 1 at a time from about 200 to 0. That was actually a blast. Anyway, I'm guessing if a faction (Alliance or Horde) gains control of a tower and holds it for like 2 minutes? then it gets burned and Drek loses one of his minions making him easier to kill?

What do the graveyards do?

4) What does resilience actually do?

5) What should I try next? I've done AV but it can get boring running it 40x over 2 days. I've done Arena and suck at it. Should I try AB, WSG or EOTS? I'm thing WSG because I need the marks for parts of the Gladiator set.

Thanks all|||Quote:

1. They are from the server/realm Burning Legion. If there's nothing there, that means they're from your realm. there's several other realms that are there so you can see who's in your battlegroup. you wont see your server name, but those from other realms will see your server name.

2. Gladiator tells you its the first season, or S1 gear. Vengeful, then Merciless, then Brutal. Brutal is the current S4 gear. If you're doing AV, you cannot get S3 or S4 gear. You'll need to buy those with arena points. how to get arena points? do arena, not BG's. Vindicator gear? Just like gladiator gear, except another set, purchased with honor and tokens. good luck with that. just choose the gear that will give you best benefits for the costs/time.

3. Yes, try to keep your towers while destorying the other's. and yes, it despawns one of the minions, if you want to call it that. Each capped tower will cost the other team 75 resources, i think. so that's a mighty blow. killing Galv will make the horde lose 100 resources. same with horde killing Belinda, if you let belinda die, you'll lose 100 resources. if Drek dies, game over automatically. For games that lasts a while, and you end up winning off of kills, try to cap the mines also. it helps. Also, graveyards are very important. they are strategic in every way possible. you dont know how much of a pain it is for the other team to fend you off if you have a certain graveyard capped, especially if they're halfway trying to regain control and 10 alliance respawn right in their faces. demoralizing, sure. but whats better? you're closer to objectives. that means its easier for your team to get to towers, aid stations, and other graveyards. graveyards are very important.

4. Resilience is anti-crit. Get about 5% for pvp. It's the same as Defense, or Defense rating. its crit mitigation. Here's what you need to know:

1% Crit Mitigation = 39.4 Resilience Rating = 25 Defense = 59 Defense Rating.

These stack with each other, so you can combine gear that has defense rating and resilience rating and defence and add them up. If you know math, you can figure out how much % crit mit you have with all your gear.

5. Do EoTS and AV. just get the gear you need and leave. You're spreading yourself thin right now because, for some reason, someone said that Gladiator gear is great if you're going to do Kara. and that's where im a bit confused. what are you trying to do? you were talking about Kara just the other week and now you're doing PvP. I suggest sticking to one area and going from there. you can always go back when you gear up well for one, then switch gear when you need to but going back and forth all the time will lead to a confusing endgame path.|||Quote:

good info, two minor corrections (you had Merciless/Vengeful switched).

S1 = Gladiator(2)/???

S2 = Merciless/Veteran's(3)

S3 = Vengeful(1)/Vindicator's

S4 = Brutal(1)/Guardian's

(1) bought with Arena points, not Honor.

(2) no longer purchasable except with raid tokens

(3) no longer purchasable

Also, there usually isn't a choice between, for example, Vengeful and Vindicator's for a given slot. The Veteran's/Vindicator's/Guardian's gear covers slots that the Merciless/Vengeful/Brutal gear doesn't have options for, Neck, Wrist, Belt, Ring, and Boots, that I can remember off the top of my head. Other than that, yes, it's best to compare all your gear to what you can replace it with, and compare the benefit to the cost. The most expensive items will usually be the biggest upgrades, but that isn't to say that you wouldn't get a bigger upgrade by buying two of the other items instead.

The Vengeful weapons and shoulders, as well as most of the Brutal gear and some of the Guardian's gear, requires the character have a sufficiently high arena rating in order to purchase them.|||@Tater

I just want say well done for not being scared of being branded a "nub" etc for asking questions.

You asked good questions and laid the post out well. Finally, a readable, sensible post and no wall of text!

Brilliant.

(I only had time to skim over the replies so hopefully I'm not repeating anyone.)

So my small contribution to this post is to remind you that a couple of patches ago Blizzard added some "starter" PvP gear.

They're faction rewards (Honored or higher) with the following:

Honor Hold / Thrallmar

Cenarion Expedition

Keepers of Time

Lower City

The Sha'tar.

Here's an example of the set a Hunter could pick up:

http://wowdigger.com/itemset/view/74...ain-battlegear

(The sets of 5 piece, 6 pieces are listed here due to the 2 competing factions.)

These sets are a good start if only for the resilience.

Good luck!|||Thanks Guys

1. Thanks for the info. I had no idea that AV was combined from all servers. I wondered how they filled 40 man teams in 10 minutes from my 1 server. I assumed there were other people waiting around in Darn, SW and IF that I never saw. Makes much more sense now.

5. Well, here's the deal. My guild only runs Kara maybe once or twice a week. I've been 5x (25 badges in all) and gotten 1 epic (Last Friday) so it will take me 2 years to gear for raids. (I actually did first heroic last night and figured out you can get badges there). They run raids a few other nights a week but I'm not really geared for those and only get in if there is an emergency (once to Lurker and got hammered). I can't get into Kara Pugs or raids because my gear is "squishy" as some like to call it. Basically I need something else to do because farming gold is just getting boring. There is also a nice PVM Axe you can get with Arena Points that I need. The problem is me and partner are getting crushed in Arena because we are Dungeon Drop Blued out while our opponents are S3. Our first week, we were 0-10 with only 2 games we were close to winning. For the Axe, we have to stay over 1200 rating and in order to do that, I'm going to have to get better gear to win some matches. So basically, I'm PVPing for better gear to get the Axe and keep from getting bored gold farming. The gear set I'm looking at, needs marks from different PVP arenas so I'll eventually have to do them all.

Thanks

It looks like I'm going to need S1 or S2 to start because I'm not going to be able to keep a good enough Arena Rating to get S3 or S4 gear wearing blue dungeon drop armor. What's the difference between S1 and S2? Would it be dumb to get S1? Is S2 better?

Thanks

I am a nub. I've only played 4 or 5 months after playing another MMORPG for 6 years. I don't mind asking questions. I appreciate all the help I've received from this board.

I can't go to Wowdigger from work but I assume you linked the Stalker set which I have. I didn't have it when I went 0-10 in Arena though. Hopefully it will make a difference this week.|||If youre looking to go down the PVP route, your best bet is to farm the BGs and get your self some S2 gear, along with the guardian bracer, belt, boots, rings and necklace.

Still do your 10 games of arena a week and save up your points. You will lose a few at the beginning but look at is as good practice, as you get more S2 gear it will get better.

Eile|||Tater, what are your stats?

as far as gear goes, being squishy is a problem. what you need is some pvp gear to make up for what you're missing. you do not need the pvp sets to do dungeons. you dont need them for heriocs. you do not need them for kara. people only get them because its an alternative to running dungeons. you dont even need the axe. get the sonic spear, terokk's quill, or even the rep weapon from honor hold. they work fine. use the list from the link i sent you last month. that will get you ready for kara just fine. run with them in kara until you can get better things from your badges. if you want to do pvp, get pvp gear. the only reason why you would get a pvp item is for the weapon, or because you're a tank. and you're not a tank. otherwise, pvp items will help you live, but your dps will suck. you can do it to get a good mix, but i'd go for maybe one or two items only. there is no need to get more.

Badges - and there is are two etherial/consortium guys standing in lower city just west of the flight path. one gives you the heroic daily that will give you two, yes TWO badges if you complete the daily. that, plus the badges from bosses will get you badge gear very quickly, giving you less of that "squishy" feeling, and giving you more of the "pwnage" feeling. Not to mention you might get decent drops there.

Rep Enchants - dont forget aldor/scryer shoulder enchants, and SSO or sha'tar head enchants. these are rep enchants requiring honored, revered, or exalted. you'll have to check with each.

Enchants - please enchant some gear. stats to chest, agility to weapon, agility to bracers, back and boots, stamina to them also. GET the leg armor kit.

Gems - Gem up what you can. right now just work on agility/stamina, or just stamina and attack power. you dont need the others too much.

but with gems and enchants, make sure you get as much HIT out of your gear first. then gem/enchant to make up for the difference until you're capped.

i feel like a broken record.|||Quote:

Your advice was great. I have almost every piece of armor on the link you PM'd me. Check my armor (sorry I can't link it at work) Thunderhorn Billybrasky. I'm gemmed well (except headgear) and I'm enchanted to the max (except 2h weapon). I simply can't get into Kara PUGs with 90% blues.

I do thank you for your advice. That website has helped tons. Without it, I wouldn't have gotten into Kara w/ my guild.|||Quote:

Tater, i know you know this, but im going to say this for those who think that you need purples to get into kara. Gear can only take you so far. Gear isnt everything. and just because you have gladiator gear, heck, even the gladiator set, i would rather take the guy in PvE blues. why? because he knows PvE. there's two different mindsets when it comes to pvp and pve. and i'd rather have a person who knows how to work as a group than a person who's been in AV every day for two months getting his gear.

second thing i'd like to say is... stop doing kara pugs! do it with your guild. if they do it often, they probably have it on farm pretty much. just ride on the coattails of the better geared folks and get your purples there. if you think of the mentality of the pug, you'll realize that most of the people there are hoping there's a few guys in purple to help them out. if you see a bunch of folks in gladiator gear running kara.... take the next ticket out of there. i mean run with them, but you'll do a lot better with folks who have PvE gear.... simply beause.. they know PvE. as i've said before, some gladiator gear is fine, and some even mix it up with other gear to help balance themselves out. thats fine too. just make sure you dont gimp yourself too much getting too much stamina/resilience gear when you really need hit/agi gear.

and if you really want to get purples, i'd get badge gear. do the daily heroic for the extra badges. get the purples and move on. i know i havent had much experience with end game content, as i've turned 70 for the third time last week. and all i've really been doing is leveling characters, but i do know that you dont need purples to hit kara. its more about how you play the game.

take a look at some of these threads also.

http://forums.worldofwar.net/showthread.php?t=409954

http://forums.worldofwar.net/showthread.php?t=408929

basically says that gear isnt the most important thing when it comes to kara, or heroics, or anything else. people want to see others in purple because its one way of assuring themselves their repair bill will be minimal (ie. no, or very few wipes).|||Tater, checked out your gear last night. you seem to be missing some health bro. you have the same amount of health as my hunter when he hit maybe 62. but 6000 health will help you survive one boss hit. i'd be more comfortable at 7k health.

as for your gems and enchants, i cant think of anything bad to say about them. well unless you have way too much mana at the end of fights, then maybe replacing the mp5 gems with some +hit gems, as you're not yet hit capped. but dont worry too much about it. i dont see why you cant do just fine running kara with your guild. for pugs, you have idiots out there that just look at "color" and if its not purple, they automatically assume it sucks, or they expect to clear the entire instance. ok, then that's not the party for you. remember, the gear you have now will only help you progress through the instance.

and have you bought anything with badges yet? there's some really good stuff at 100 badges. =]
